A Quick Word About the Anthony Recommends
I´m often asked, by customers and the press, what´s "the best" book to read on a particular game. If I can get all the details about what they´re looking for, I can usually come up with a good selection. But often, I don´t have all the details. In such cases, I choose a book that I feel is beginner-friendly, but also has enough advanced information to accommodate someone who´s played before, and will improve their results. This is the primary guideline I use in the choices that follow.
I hope you won´t be concerned that many (not all) of the choices are Huntington Press titles. The truth is, we set out to acquire and produce the best products in gambling, and in many cases, that´s what we´ve done.

Regardless of the type of poker you want to play—high or low limits, no limit, cash games or tournaments—you must begin by reading The Theory of Poker. Many concepts that are fundamental to poker success are explained here. Mastering them will prepare you for higher learning, as well as allow you to be competitive immediately. This book is technical, but a fantastic learning tool.
For Cash Games
Super System 2, which is the follow-up book to the Doyle Brunson classic Super System, covers six different games (including no-limit hold ’em) on the live-play level, with contributions from poker luminaries Johhny Chan, Daniel Negreanu, Mike Caro, and others. There are also chapters on online and tournament play.
For Tournament Play
This is a three-part program.
1. Read The Theory of Poker, as recommended above.
2. Read Kill Phil, by Blair Rodman and Lee Nelson
3. Read Harrington on Hold ’Em Volumes I and II, by Dan Harrington and Bill Robertie

Once you’ve read The Theory of Poker, Kill Phil—The Fast Track to Success in No-Limit Hold ’Em Poker Tournaments will teach you a method that will have you competing right now. The book focuses on a technique known as “long ball,” which makes use of the powerful all-in move in no-limit games. After mastering Kill Phil, refine your game further with the “small-ball” techniques covered at length in Harrington’s excellent tandem. Incorporate both styles into your game and you’ll be a tournament-poker all-star.
