A Quick Word About the Anthony Recommends
I´m often asked, by customers and the press, what´s "the best" book to read on a particular game. If I can get all the details about what they´re looking for, I can usually come up with a good selection. But often, I don´t have all the details. In such cases, I choose a book that I feel is beginner-friendly, but also has enough advanced information to accommodate someone who´s played before, and will improve their results. This is the primary guideline I use in the choices that follow.
I hope you won´t be concerned that many (not all) of the choices are Huntington Press titles. The truth is, we set out to acquire and produce the best products in gambling, and in many cases, that´s what we´ve done.
Tournaments
There are only two good non-poker tournament books on the market, and Play to Win is easily best of the two for beginners. PTW shows you how to enter and play in a blackjack tournament by concentrating on the important fundamental skills that you must understand to compete. It’s an easy read that also has teeth; it will prepare you for more complicated strategies.
The second great book is Stanford Wong’s classic Casino Tournament Strategy. This book concentrates mostly on last-hand strategies, which are not covered in Play to Win. It’s complicated, but powerful. Plus, there are chapters on other tournament games, including craps, baccarat, and keno.
For poker tournaments, I recommend Kill Phil—The Fast Track to Success in No-Limit Hold ’Em Poker Tournaments, by Blair Rodman and Lee Nelson. See Anthony Recommends for Poker for other poker-tournament recommendations.
