Beneath the Neon/My Week at the Blue Angel Bundle

Armed with a flashlight, tape recorder, and expandable baton, Las Vegas CityLife writer and editor Matthew O’Brien explored the black-and-gray underworld of the Las Vegas flood-control system for four years.

Beneath the Neon: Life and Death in the Tunnels of Las Vegas is the internationally acclaimed chronicle of O’Brien’s adventures in subterranean Las Vegas. He follows in the footsteps of a psycho killer. He braces against a raging flood. He parties with naked crackheads. He learns how to make meth, that art is most beautiful where it’s least expected, that in many ways, he prefers underground Las Vegas to aboveground Las Vegas, but that there are no pots of gold under the neon rainbow.

My Week at the Blue Angel and Other Stories from the Storm Drains, Strip Clubs, and Trailer Parks of Las Vegas is O'Brien's poingnant follow-up to Beneath the Neon in which he co-habits with some of the residents of the iconic downtown motel that's since been demolished, and hangs out with a cast of the real-life Vegas prostitutes, ex-cons, and homeless who reside in the city's trailer parks, weekly motels, and subterranean storm drains. In this creative-nonfiction collection, O’Brien and veteran photographer Bill Hughes show a side of the city many locals and visitors are curious about, but few ever explore.
